Choose a format from the activity
A backpack supports hands-free movement, a duffel favours wide equipment access, a waist pack keeps small essentials close and a tote can suit short transitions. Select one primary activity and describe how the bag reaches the start point, how long it is carried and where it is opened. This prevents a category name from hiding conflicting expectations.
Turn equipment into a fit map
List the largest item dimensions, quantity and orientation, then mark which items may touch. Show footwear, clothing, hydration, tools, electronics and personal items separately. A dimensioned fit map helps the pattern team set compartment depth and opening length; a generic request for “more storage” does not show whether the equipment can enter or be removed easily.
Separate clean, wet and quick-access zones
Define which contents need ventilation, lining protection or isolation from the main compartment. Identify the order in which users reach a bottle, phone, keys, jacket or wet gear. Each divider and pocket uses space and adds seams, so approve separation only where it solves a real handling problem.
Select carry details for the movement pattern
State whether users walk, ride, climb stairs, move between vehicles or carry the bag only a short distance. Review strap length, padding, handle position, stabilization and how the load sits when full. For convertible carry, describe when each mode is used and where unused straps are stored so they do not drag or obstruct access.
Assign materials to wear and exposure zones
Map abrasion points, floor contact, perspiration, dirt and likely moisture before selecting shell, base, lining, mesh, webbing and hardware. If water resistance matters, specify the expected exposure and construction scope. Material descriptions and performance language should remain conditional on the chosen components, seams, closures and agreed project checks.
Approve the sample as an activity system
Pack representative equipment and review fit, balance, pocket access, closure operation, ventilation areas, strap comfort and stress-point construction. Check that branding stays visible in the normal carry position and that the packed bag remains stable when set down if that matters to the use case. Record approved changes before production reference documents are finalized.
Build a comparable supplier brief
Send the activity, user, equipment list, preferred bag format, dimensions, carry duration, separation needs, material priorities, branding, packaging, target market and estimated quantity. Use the same brief when comparing proposals so differences in construction and included components are visible. The commercial manufacturer hub remains the destination for supplier evaluation; this guide is the preparation framework.
