Define the route, duration and load
State whether the pack is intended for short summit movement, technical climbing, overnight use or a broader mountain-travel range. List the expected equipment and identify dense items, compressible layers and anything carried outside the main body. Capacity alone does not define the structure: approximate load and carrying duration influence the frame concept, hip support, strap geometry and reinforcement.
Set the torso and harness brief
Record the target user range and whether the project needs a fixed or adjustable torso arrangement. Specify shoulder-strap shape, sternum strap, hip-belt concept, back-panel contact zones and any load-lifter or stabilizing details. The sample should be reviewed with representative weight because an empty pack cannot show balance, pressure points or how the bag moves on the body.
Plan access around packed equipment
Choose a top, panel, roll-top or combined opening according to how users reach layers and equipment. Mark hydration routing, internal organization and quick-access zones without allowing extra pockets to interrupt compression or climbing movement. If the pack needs tool, pole, helmet or rope carry, define the attachment item and retention path instead of requesting generic webbing loops.
Create a stress and reinforcement map
Identify shoulder-strap anchors, haul handles, hip-belt connections, compression points, base contact and external tool attachments. Reinforcement should follow the load path and chosen construction rather than appear on every panel. During sampling, inspect how the seams sit under load, whether attachments twist and whether added layers create unwanted stiffness or bulk.
Specify materials by zone
Separate shell, high-wear panels, lining, mesh, foam, webbing, buckles and zipper requirements. State priorities such as abrasion resistance, low weight, hand feel, colour or cleaning. Weather-related language must match the selected fabric, coating, seams, closures and any agreed verification; a coated material alone does not make the complete backpack waterproof.
Run a loaded sample review
Check critical measurements, usable capacity, harness adjustment, load balance, opening access, compression, tool retention, zipper operation and base stability with representative contents. Record changes on the specification and approved sample. Any durability or performance test should be defined for the project rather than inferred from this guide.
